Stocks: A Big Blue Bounce

Stocks gained ground Monday, attempting to recapture large losses from the first two weeks of the year.

News from the financial sector continued to worry investors Monday, with Merrill Lynch (MER) still looking for extra capital and smaller banks reporting hits from deteriorating credit. News reports also circulated of a potential $24 billion writedown from Citigroup (C). But technology giant IBM (IBM) offered investors some rare good news.

In the early afternoon on Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 117.54 points, or 0.93%, to 12,723.84. The broader S&P 500 index moved 7.71 points, or 0.55%, higher to 1,408.73. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 21.4 points, or 0.88%, to 2,461.34.

Twenty stocks were rising for every nine falling on the New York Stock Exchange, while the ratio on the Nasdaq was 17 to 10 positive.

Euroshares close flat to higher; tech outperforms on SAP, IBM reports ...

(Updating with full report) LONDON, Jan. 14, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- Europe's leading exchanges closed out the session flat to higher amid ongoing credit concerns and fears of a US recession, but the technology sector outperformed after strong quarterly sales from SAP and a solid earnings report from US computer giant IBM. (NYSE:IBM) The Dow Jones STOXX (OOTC:DJSFF) 50 Index dipped 0.17 point to 3,539.03 while the DJ STOXX 600 Index ticked up 1.09 points, or 0.3 pct, to 344.78. At the close of European trading, US stocks were trading higher after IBM said preliminary fourth-quarter earnings rose 24 pct year-on-year to beat Wall Street expectations by a wide margin, with the weaker dollar helping to push revenue up 10 pct. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, of which IBM is a component, was up more than 100 points.

Viewer Feedback On Mass Transit Bailout

(CBS) We wanted to know your thoughts on the state's plan to bail out mass transit in the Chicago area and Gov. Rod Blagojevich's proposal to allow seniors across the state to ride public buses and trains for free. Here's what you said: Thanks, but no thanks Gov. As a retired senior who rides CTA to Dr. appts etc. I think that we already get a good deal with the reduced senior fare. I don't want to be treated disrespecful by others, because we are riding for free, and it will happen.

--Alberta B.No wonder the CTA is in trouble, the news recently reported that a CTA bus driver could retire after 3 yrs. employment and receive medical coverage for the remainder of their life! This is a great, and unnecessary, expense to the taxpayers! Why are collar counties paying more of a tax increase than those people in Chicago and Cook county who are the ones using the services of the CTA? I haven't been in Chicago or used the Cook county transit system for several years, since I live outside of Cook county, I don't know why I'm paying for this service, you may as well tax the rest of the counties in Illinois, it makes just as much sense.

High-Tech Shopping Carts Coming to Supermarkets

The system also uses radio-frequency identification to sense where the shopper's cart is in the store.

The RFID data can help ShopRite and food makers understand shopping patterns, and the technology can also be used to send certain advertisements to people at certain points — an ad for 50 cents off Oreos, for example, when a shopper enters the cookie aisle.

Microsoft said it is still working on how it will present commercials and coupons.

Microsoft is also working with MediaCart and ShopRite to help advertisers reach potential consumers based on past grocery purchases, which are logged when they swipe their loyalty cards.

"This is not all necessarily about bombarding consumers, about targeting advertising," said Scott Ferris, general manager of Microsoft's Advertiser and Publisher Solutions group.
