Interest rates likely to be kept on hold
Many economists were badly wrong-footed this time last year by a surprise January rate rise. So, after a nail-biting run-up to last month’s hard-to-call Bank decision to cut base rates by a quarter-point, the Square Mile will once more be on tenterhooks as it waits for the MPC statement this Thursday. There has not been a back-to-back move in interest rates since June 2004, but growing fears over prospects and the MPC’s December conclusion, revealed in its minutes, that "a substantial loosening in policy might be needed" to bolster growth are seen as leaving this month’s decision on a knife-edge. Each month The Times looks at the factors that can weigh most heavily with the MPC. Here is the latest assessment: Growth and activity: losing steam Latest GDP data still showed substantial momentum in the economy in the third quarter, with growth at a strong 0.7 per cent.
The American Police State
The jury may have rejected the federal government's claim that the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development funneled millions of dollars to Middle Eastern terrorists. It may have acquitted Mohammad el-Mezain, the former chairman of the foundation, of virtually all criminal charges related to funding terrorism (the jury deadlocked on one of the 32 charges against el-Mezain), and it may have deadlocked on the charges that had been lodged against four other former leaders of the charity, but don't be fooled. This mistrial will do nothing to impede the administration's ongoing contempt for the rule of law. It will do nothing to stop the curtailment of our civil liberties and rights. The grim march toward a police state continues. Constitutional rights are minor inconveniences, noisome chatter, flies to be batted away on the steady road to despotism.
Editor's mailbag: Stop drunks from having more babies affected by FAS
This is in reference to the article "FAS (fetal alcohol syndrome) impact lasts a lifetime" in the Dec. 30 Sunday edition. Perhaps someone can explain to me why we allow alcoholics and druggies to give birth to several babies. One only has to read about Justin Scott, who was born with a .237 blood alcohol level, who cannot speak and whose mobility and eyesight are limited, not to mention all the other unfair disabilities he lives with, to question why his mother, who was an advanced alcoholic, was allowed to bring him into this world. The article tells us that "Justin was her third child born with effects from her drinking. Justin's older sister would end up in a mental health facility. His other sibling ended up in the care of his mother's family."According to the article, Justin's biological mother was "living in a tent near the Alaska Native Medical Center when she went into labor and a fellow homeless person told her to go to the nearby hospital.
Curt Cavin: IRL & Formula One Q&A
The action is much better than either the U.S. open-wheel series and there's American's winning. There has never been a more tense and exciting time in any racing series than the time from the start of the MotoGP race in Portugal until the end of the race in Valencia. Just an absolute blast! Hopefully, TG and KK figure it out. I'll be at Laguna Seca and Miller Motorsports Park in any event (and maybe IMS if they land a MotoGP race in '08). (Dave Becker, Boise, Idaho) Answer: Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, Ive heard this from a lot of people. Theyre sick of the split. I am, too. Question: When are we going to have a Cahill and/or Fernandez announcement? The thought of 23 cars (plus Herb & Roth) at Homestead is pretty exciting! (Matt Converset, Decatur, Ind.) Answer: You might want to cool your jets.
