| OC Blog: Sheriff Carona
The shock is starting to wear off, but the awe is still apparent. Watching the sheriff sit in a federal courtroom--as a defendant-- was one of the most bizarre moments in TV newsdom. Behind him sat two other defendants...drug dealers we surmised. After the brief hearing we waited to see if he was wearing hand cuffs...we waited until he stood up...then heard the undeniable clanking of chains. Ohhh...came the hushed response from the reporters in the audience. It is an odd place to be sometimes---a front row observer of such a debacle. It is my job however to explain to you the magnitude of a story in the most balanced way possible. I want to believe I do that everyday. This has been tough. I've known Carona since he was elected nine years ago. There have been dozens of interviews and over those years we have made small talk...about his wife and his son.
Aussie world champ charged with drug offences
The arrests are part of police efforts to dismantle a large criminal syndicate in which the two men are allegedly involved. During the four month covert operation, 28,500 MDMA tablets have allegedly been seized, with a street value of $1.4 million. Police said more than one kg of MDMA powder was also seized, which could potentially be made into tens of thousands of tablets worth about $1.1 million. Police have also charged a third man and are questioning a fourth. A 25-year-old man from Newrybar in NSW will appear at Byron Bay Local Court on December 7 charged with possessing prohibited drugs, possessing equipment for administering prohibited drugs and having goods in custody. A 23-year-old man from Suffolk Park was arrested at his home tonight and is being interviewed at Byron Bay Police Station.
Contractor loses La. scholarship account data dating back to 1998
BATON ROUGE, La. -- A Boston-based contractor hired to store and safeguard state scholarship and college savings account data lost most of those records _ including bank account numbers and student and parent Social Security numbers _ during a move, officials say. "We certainly don't want to create any panic. But people should be aware and take the necessary steps," said Melanie Amrhein, executive director of the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance. "This is backup data off of a mainframe that contains sensitive personal information." Special equipment and software and "sophisticated computer skills" would be needed to get the compressed records from the TOPS scholarship program, START Saving Program, and Free Application for Federal Student Aid, according to a notice posted on the Internet.
New Charges For Man Who Led Police On Wild Chase
Finally, the suspect exited the Dolphin Expressway and sped up Perimeter Road, next to Miami International Airport. He turned again at 25th Street where his road ran out in a Customs warehouse area. After the driver skidded over a median between two police over a median and having nowhere else to go, the suspect slammed into a traffic barrier. Soto then took off of foot and tried to outrun police but they caught up to him as he jumped spread eagle into some bushes. He surrendered after at least six officers jumped on top of him. Video of the capture shows several officers punching and kicking Soto as he was pinned to the ground. Two of the officers involved in the take down were suspended with pay. Police realized Soto was not the person they were looking for. The suspects wanted in the lunch truck robbery were described as three males and a female who was driving the getaway car.
Commercial means that can't justify ends
I hope the AFL fights for the rights of its sportsmen and drop kicks the Government's ultimatum out of the MCG. The AFL may well be fighting for the rights of all to be left alone from the government interference. Darryl Coulthard, Castlemaine Sport in our psyche I HAVE a question for Sushi Das (Opinion, 6/10). Who were the first Australians? They were the members of the Combined Australian XI cricket team who took on England at the MCG in 1877 and won by 45 runs. It was the first act of the colonies uniting. The Yanks had their War of Independence. We had a cricket match. We expressed our emerging national consciousness through sport then, as we still do. Much the same dynamics were in play when most of us stayed up in 1983 to watch the America's Cup fall to us.
